Wireless Liverpool?

Posted by: Kate Harding | 15 November 2007

We are all about to benefit from becoming one of six BT Wireless Cities, with access to BT Openzone across Liverpool city centre. But what does this actually mean?

From what I understand*, it means, I will be able to connect my laptop or PDA to a high speed wireless BT connection in Liverpool city centre...if I am happy to pay BT for it.

So, who will this benefit? I’m finding it very difficult to work that out – the mobile worker with no office base perhaps?

A launch event is being held over the next few days at Williamson Square, maybe some of my sceptical questions will be answered and I will be made aware of the merits of this initiative.

However, with a one hour BT Openzone voucher costing £6.00, I would rather pay for a great cup of tea at my favourite city centre café which provides free Wi-fi access.

*with very limited techy knowledge and the little information I could find about wireless cities.

I wonder how it will be policed, and what sort of range this will have (city centres differ in size pending on city... and whether contention will be a problem, as well as whether people closer to the centre get a faster service than those on the edge... will they be forced to pay the same? lots of interesting questions! I personally look forward to the day when Internet access is much like having access to water.

The large corporate chains such as Costa Coffee and Starbucks all use either T-Mobile The Cloud or BT Openzone which charge for their service. Yes £6 is quite steep for an hours access to BT Openzone but you have 24 hours to use it. Also I'm always very wary of a free service. I am concerned about the level of security offered and the ease of connectivity. If there are technical issues its often left to the host to get me connected which usually means the person servicing behind the counter, who is better equiped to make serve a mocha than give technical support. Using a recognised brand such as Openzone means you are just a phone call away from technical help. Also they list their hotspots on a directory, something the independant free wifi providers don't do so its hit and miss finding a free wirless network, unless you can remember where you made a chalk mark on the pavement.

Great for students in the summer or business people visiting the area or tourists visting the market and wishing to look up local information. Browse the internet, send and receive e-mail, download music, watch a film clip or makeFREE phone calls using Skype(tm). Enjoy! - Amanda - http://www.letsgowifi.co.uk

I normally live in Liverpool and work in London - and I am disgusted at the cost of BT and T-Mobile, freinds and colleagues in the US cannot believe how we are constantly 'suckered' into paying over the top prices. So how about instead of getting all excited about BT's plan to install wireless in city centres (at a massive profit to themselves), that we simply don't use them and continue the campaign for FREE wifi EVERYWHERE... it really isn't that difficult.
