Microsoft

They are

  • The world’ largest software company – developing, manufacturing, licensing, and supporting a wide range of software products.
  • Founders of the Microsoft Partner Network, which Mando Group has been a part of as a Gold Certified Partner for over 2 years.

They needed….

  • A showcase application to demonstrate and sell the Expression Suite of tools, plus show how designers and developers can create rich, appealing interfaces using Microsoft Silverlight.
  • An application capable of demonstrating that there are no limitations when it comes to designing with Silverlight and of showing how Bing maps integration and customisation can be undertaken.
  • To demonstrate how Silverlight applications can be hosted within Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) and prove that MOSS should be seen as an application platform, not just a product for intranets or lists.

We provided…

  • A jaw-dropping and innovative sales dashboard that not only showcases Microsoft Silverlight’s capabilities, but also proves that you can ‘light up SharePoint’.

How we did it…

  • Employed the ‘SCRUM’ framework (an Agile methodology) to project manage, holding daily, iterative review meetings to design and deliver a Rich Internet Application (RIA) for them in a matter of just a few weeks.
  • Sought inspiration for the map interface amongst the filmic design concepts of visual designer Mark Coleran (The Bourne Ultimatum, Mission Impossible 3, etc) in order to create an engaging way to visualise sales performance on a global map.
  • Designed the map concepts, animations and transitions within the dashboard.
  • Developed a Silverlight Bing map interface, with custom map tiles which retrieves sales data from Sharepoint.
  • Hosted the application within Microsoft SharePoint Online, making it readily available to those who need it within the organisation and thereby maximising its use.

And the end result…?

  • Michael Koester, Expression Sales Lead (EMEA/DPE Sales) for Microsoft is publicising the application within Microsoft for sales purposes and has used it to do a very successful demonstration to designers and developers at Microsoft UK Tech Days 2010.  Mando Group’s Head of Programming, Matt Salmon, was also at the event to help demonstrate – find out more in his blog post.
  • The application was also very well received at Microsoft’s In-Person – Digital & Creative Agency event, attended by over 200 key delegates from the sector. More about that on the Mando Group Labs blog.
